Literacy Project #1:

Name: Earn to Learn – Books for Speakers

Description: The Rotary Club of Des Moines gives a book to the Wallace Elementary library each week in the name of our speaker. Each year, the club provides $400 for the librarian to purchase children’s books. The club asks speakers to sign the book and add a motivational message to the students.

Literacy Project #2:

Name: Earn to Learn – Mentor Students

Description: Des Moines Club Rotarians mentor 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students on a weekly basis. The student is released from class. They talk about the book they are currently reading and/or the student reads to the mentor, and relationships are formed.

Literacy Project #3:

Name: Earn to Learn – Dictionary Project

Description: Each student receives a book at holiday time, and the 5th graders receive a dictionary. Students receive “book bucks” to then “buy” a book from the teacher’s selections purchased with funds from our club. The best readers from each class are honored at one of our Spring Rotary lunch meetings.

Literacy Project #4:

Name: Earn to Learn – Sponsor Activities

Description: Our club sponsors student attendance at the Science Center, Y-Camp, 5th grade over-night, and cultural performances at the Civic Center.
