Literacy Project #1:
Name: On-going Business Partner toCapitol View Elementary School
Description: Capitol View Elementary School sits in the shadow of our State Capitol and is the heart of a neighborhood of hard working yet low income families.
Eighty-Eight percent of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Capitol View qualifies for Provision II School; which provides all students with breakfast and lunch at no charge . Fifty-nine percent of the students are minorities.
The Des Moines AM Rotary chose to be an educational partner to this particular school because of the diversity, the intentional programming and leadership of passionate educators. Our goal is to support a generation of readers, children who are prepared to succeed in school. We have held club meetings on site at the school. Working collectively Des Moines AM Rotarians know that we are making a difference for hundreds of elementary students, their teachers, families and the neighborhood in which they live."

Literacy Project #7:
Name: Extension Activities to Build Life Experience
Description: Working in conjunction with Capitol View staff, DMAM members identify specific projects to increase life experiences of students and strengthen family relationships.
- Character Counts bracelets were purchased so that teachers could reward students demonstrating good habits.
- To honor good habits while preparing for standardized tests, 125 students were rewarded by spending a day at the Science Center of Iowa including lunch and a show at the IMAX theater. Students read about and saw interesting artifacts from the Titanic. They learned about the many lives changed by that tragic event in history.
- Several selected families are participating in Family First Nights at the Civic Center of Des Moines. This public-private project is designed to introduce families who would not otherwise have the financial means to attend theater and Broadway shows . Each show will also include a special post-show backstage tour including a chance to meet cast members.
- Held a "Drive for Educational Games" for students to play at recess on days when they are unable to go outside.

Literacy Project #8:
Name: Life Long Learning Center
Description: We understand that many parents of Capitol View students may themselves lack the ability to read fluently. In response, DMAM established the Life Long Learning Center as a neighborhood resource for adult learning. In this designated room off a main hallway, parents and neighbors can access materials by using the computer to research educational and job opportunities, complete applications and identify community resources. DMAM will provide on-gong financial resources to keep appropriate materials in the Life Long Learning Center. We also arranged with Meredith Publishing to deliver magazines of interest to parents.
