District 6000 Champions Literacy

The District sponsored Iowa Stories 2000, a statewide literacy project of First Lady Christie Vilsack. In 2000 the Literacy Committee created Kids Who Read Succeed, a campaign to encourage clubs to adopt literacy projects, with a brochure, Tip Sheets, a literacy web site, club programs, and Baby TALK training for adults who work with young families. A District Committee has organized Rotary contributions to establish a library in Xicotepec, Mexico. In 2005, $5,000 was donated for the new book to be given to kindergartners in Iowa.

Des Moines AM Club - 2006 RI Significant Achievement Award

In 2006, the Des Moines AM Club won the RI Significant Achievement Award for its work with Capital View Elementary School. Here is a quote fromm the Des Moines AM Club:

"Capitol View Elementary school sits in the shadow of our State Capitol and is the heart of a neighborhood of hard working yet low income families. The Des Moines AM Rotary chose to be an educational partner to this particular school because of the diversity, the intentional programming and leadership of passionate educators. Our goal is to support a generation of readers, children who are prepared to succeed in school. We established the Life Long Learning Center as a neighborhood resource for adult learning, provided on-going tutoring for school aged children, worked the book sale, provided educational games for indoor recess, tickets to the Science Center, study carrels, winter coats and of course BOOKS and more BOOKS! Working collectively Des Moines AM Rotarians know that we are making a difference for hundreds of elementary students, their teachers, families and the neighborhood in which they live."
