Globalization and Iowa Education
by Gail Johnston

|
| |
May traditionally brings Ames Morning Rotary Education awards. Since Rotary is an international organization, the committee this year chose to recognize teachers who have helped children prepare for a global society.
Over the past ten years, the idea of “Globalization” has meant one of two things to most educators. To some, globalization calls to mind global competition. As former Governor Vilsack said, “Kids in Iowa need to be prepared to compete not only with kids in Minnesota, Illinois and Nebraska, but also with kids in Vietnam, India and China”. Thomas Friedman says the world has changed, and “No one has told the kids”. Iowa is telling the kids. An understanding that Iowa kids must be prepared to compete globally has this year led to changes in Iowa policy and code. The Iowa Department of Education has enacted increased graduation standards. Starting in 2008, all high school freshmen will need three years of math and three years of science to graduate.
Iowa has long prided itself on “local control” of curriculum and standards. This year there seems to be a growing consensus that Iowa needs strong state grade-level content standards to ensure Iowa children are prepared to compete with both students from other states and with students from around the world.
Other educators pondering globalization ask, “What skills and attitudes will our students need to be effective workers and communicators in an increasingly diverse workplace?” Clearly strong Math, Science, and literacy skills are essential. Ames superintendent Linda Beyea recently made an impassioned plea for foreign languages at the elementary level. Certainly language fluency will be an asset for tomorrow’s workers. Those workers will also need to understand other cultures and be able to work on a project with a wide variety of people. This April, Ames Morning Rotary gave Tim Mooney $500 to support his ongoing efforts to enable Ames high students to build new schools in Uganda. We also support the school garden project in Uganda, not only because it helps feed people in Uganda, but also because we know these experiences enrich ISU students. It is evident that these international experiences prepare Story County students to work in a diverse world, but you might ask yourselves, “How do classroom teachers structure lessons to accomplish this?”
Come to Rotary May 30 to hear that story!

Minutes of Board of Directors
March 13, 2007 |
|
| |
Present: Sandy Horton, Dave Kraemer, Jim Obrecht, Dave Miller, Scott Sanders, Jill Guffy, Jane Acker, Jim Ziebold, Dale Ruigh, Daryl Vegge
Minutes of the February meeting were approved as submitted.
Jim Ziebold noted that, as per board action of last month's meeting, a $10,000 8 month CD was purchased at US Bank using club reserve funds.
Club Service: Tanya Anderson has agreed to take Angie Weber's place as chair of this committee until the end of the year (June 30).
Community Service: Dale will continue to circulate sign-up sheets for the Mortensen Road clean-up on March 31. He will also solicit volunteers for the Ada Hayden clean-up, which will be held on April 14. The Noon Club will also participate at Ada Hayden.
Financial: Scott Sanders indicated that budgeted amount of $100 will be forwarded to United Way as our contribution towards the production of the annual campaign video.
Jill Guffy will talk to Tim Mooney about a convenient date for him to attend the club meeting to receive our $500 donation for Life to Life, the AHS summer service project in Uganda.
Scott suggested budgeting an amount in the 2007-2008 budget for new member service projects.
Membership: Sarah Gatchell was inducted as our newest member. The second reading is pending on a new member with induction planned for later in the month. Other potential members were named.
International/Rotaract: The campus Rotaract group will be selling raffle tickets to raise funds for the school in Uganda which is being assisted under the ISU Sustainable Rural Livelihood project. They would like this to be a long-term commitment, eventually leading to construction of a school library. This year, funds will be sent to Uganda for local purchase of books and school supplies. They hope to coordinate activities with a local Rotary club.
Rotaract members have been invited to join Ames Morning Rotary on March 21, Rotaract Day.
Rotaract will do the cooking for Stash the Trash. Thanks to the efforts of Lynette Seymour, planning is well under way. Jane Acker and Ginger Johnson will be present on March 31 to assist. VEISHEA will provide a tent. Dave Kraemer is responsible for providing grills and clement weather.
Programs: Teacher Recognition Day has been scheduled for May 30. Sandy will contact Gail Johnston about getting the selection process going in the Ames, Gilbert, and Roland-Story districts.
Stash the Trash: Sign-ups on the web site seem to be going well, although have slowed due to spring break.
Old Business: The Reach Out and Read kick-off will be held at MGMC from 5 to 7 on April 9, with a short program at 5:30. Club members will be asked to provide assistance at the event, as well as to attend.
New Business:
- Dave Miller and the nomination committee will find a replacement to serve out Angie Weber's board term.
- The District 6000 meeting will be held in Ames this year May 10-12, with an all-club luncheon meeting on the 11th. Jill Guffy moved, seconded by Jane Acker, for club funds to be used to pay the full cost of the luncheon of all Morning Rotary members who attend.
- No update from Myrna on the Rotary Friendship Exchange.
- Rotary Leadership Plan: Dave Kraemer has analyzed the material provided and feels that the principal objectives of the plan are expanded member involvement, improved leadership continuity, and extended club planning horizons. Although our club already has adopted many of the practices recommended, some realignment of club committees might be needed to comply with new guidelines. He will make specific recommendations after PETS in May.
- District meeting planning: Dave Miller reports our club will be asked to assist with some of the logistical requirements, as well as provide evening meals for visiting Rotarians.
