End-of-Year Report
by Sandy Horton, President

As this Rotary year draws to a close, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president. Each year I have heard our president remark about how the Rotary year goes by so quickly. Now I understand, this has been a whirlwind year of Rotary activity! It was last June, at the Rotary International convention, where I heard Bill Boyd, RI president, present his “Leading the Way” theme for the 2006-2007 year. At the time I knew that Ames Morning Rotarians would be involved in providing this type of leadership to our community. And “Lead the Way” you did!

My thanks go to each you for giving of yourself to a variety of community projects. You have made a difference from your involvement in the Special Olympics National Games, to reading to children in the schools with the Ames Young Professionals, to serving meals at the Emergency Residence Shelter, and of course we can’t forget “Stashing the Trash” regardless of the weather. You have supported our youth and you have recognized outstanding teachers in Ames, Gilbert and Roland-Story.

This year you have supported the following projects:

  • Main Stream Living Capital Campaign $1000.00
  • District 6000 Guatemala project $ 250.00
  • District 6000 Miles of Smiles Team $ 250.00
  • Young Professionals Literacy Project $ 250.00
  • MGMC Foundation – Diabetes Center $2500.00
  • District 6000 Reach Out and Read $ 700.00
  • Story County Community Dental Clinic $ 500.00
  • Emergency Residence Shelter $1000.00
  • Ames High Uganda Project $ 500.00
  • United Way of Story County (video) $ 100.00

In addition, Ames Morning Rotary contributed $1000 toward the Ames Rotary Scholarship awarded to area students by our two Ames clubs.

We received a Rotary International Public Relations Grant for $2000.00. This too showed how our club was leading the way in literacy. Under the leadership of Carolyn Jons, Sue Wuhs, Mary Harms, Jerri Heid and Dorothy Schumer we were involved in demonstrating to the community the importance of early childhood literacy. From the “Caught in the Act of Reading” pictures, to the ad on the Cy-Ride bus, the Rotarians for Reading display board, radio and TV spots, and the Celebration of McFarland Clinic as a Reach Out and Read Site, our community knew that we believed in youth and the importance of reading to our children.

We have welcomed nine new members to the club, two by Rotary transfer. Five members left the club due to job change or move, one transferred to the Noon club and another has found a Rotary Club in her new community. I have heard Dave Miller say so many times, Ames Morning Rotary and the fellowship we experience is a great way to start the day. I couldn’t agree more!

My thanks also go to our Board of Directors. They have been committed to continuing the tradition of a strong morning club. Furthermore, they added new ideas and have worked hard to make sure that it happened! To Jill Guffy and Rick Elbert, retiring board members, and Dave Miller, past president, we express our appreciation for your time and service to our club. You have made a difference.

We know we will be in good hands next year with Dave Kraemer and his leadership team. We are not going to let Scott Sanders get away, so while he is retiring from his term as a board member, he will be serving as our President-Elect 2007-2008. We are looking forward to a great year under your leadership and with the support of our club we will continue to “Lead the Way”.

  Congratulations Rotarians!

Horton reminded the Board about registering for the District Conference. There will be no meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary on Wednesday, May 9th in lieu of the District Conference luncheon on May 11th. All members are encouraged to attend the luncheon.
