Women in Rotary

Right from its inception, the Ames Morning Rotary Club has been fortunate to have the active participation of women in its membership. Women had first started joining Rotary Clubs in the United States in 1986. Rotary International officially accepted women as members in 1989, the same year our club was chartered. The roster of Charter Members for our club includes four women, Jan Padgitt, Phyllis Lepke, Dilys Morris and Johnny Pickett.
Jan Padgitt became one of the first two women club presidents in District 6000, when she took office in 1992. Since then, presidents of our club have included; Dorothy Schumer, 1996; Myrna Whigham in 2000; and currently, Sandy Horton.
When interviewed for this article Jan Padgitt said, “There were no problems being the first woman president. I had the full and complete cooperation from our board and members and very ready and capable assistance from District 6000.” She indicated that the club was still new and had a very small budget to do activities. She decided to emphasize community volunteering that year, including a blood drive. Jan is now retired from her work at Iowa State, which included positions in Affirmative Action and The College of Education. She says, “I admire Rotary and the many good works that they do!”
Another charter member, Johnny Pickett, served as club treasurer and organized our club sponsorship of the ISU Rotaract Club.
Currently there are two women on the list of District Governors Elect. Diana Reed of the Northwest Des Moines Club will start July 2007 and our own, previous Assistant District Governor, Susan Herrick, of Boone, will start her term as Governor in 2008.
World-wide there are 145,000 women who are Rotarians. That’s 8.5% of the total membership of 1.2 million, in 32,000 clubs, in 200 countries. Ames Morning Rotary Club has 23 women members, 35% of our total. Our current District Governor, Del Bluhm says, “As I’ve done my club visitations this year I’ve been encouraged by the involvement of women in the Rotary Clubs of District 6000. They add a new energy to Rotary.”

Minutes of Board of Directors November 14, 2006 |
|
| |
The November 14 meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:04 a.m. Those present were Sandy Horton, Jim Ziebold, Terry Adams, Dave Miller, Jill Guffy, Dave Kraemer, Arch Oldehoeft, Jim Obrecht, and Scott Sanders.
Discussion was held regarding what should be reported in the Club Minutes, and having electronic approval of the minutes. Names should be omitted for informal discussion. It was also determined to wait until the minutes are approved by the Board before publishing them.
Ziebold stated the IRS Annual Report was approved and submitted. There is a lag in Foundation giving, but by the end of November the Club will have $100 per member credit. The Club must meet the fiscal goal by April 1.
Horton stated the Christmas Open House will be at her home Tuesday, December 12, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. Community Service stated that the Club will furnish meals at the Emergency Shelter on November 29. It was stated that YSS is anticipating over 100 families.
Guffy stated that orientation for new members is being worked out.
Programs are set through December. On December 20, the Oompah Meistcrs will perform from 6:55 to 7:15 as members arrive, then break for a business meeting.
Discussion was held regarding membership status.
Reach Out and Read for the District is $7 per member. A grant of $30,000 is available if this is achieved. Discussion was held regarding buying all books for one age group, with a cost of $3600. Nicolle Gephart of Young Professionals had made a request to buy 500 books and wondered if A. M. Rotary could become a partner. A brief proposal will be sent. Kraemer suggested building literacy into the Club budget. There was a motion to explore a Young Professionals partnership.
A new ticket policy will go into effect in about two months for the Union Parking Ramp.
Discussion was held regarding Paul Harris points. It was suggested these be used to stimulate additional giving.
The Nominating Committee wants a slate by early December.
Mention was made of a world affairs seminar at Ames High School. A letter had been received requesting financial support for Veishea.
The next Board meeting will be at the Horton residence Tuesday, December 12, at 7:00 a.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 8: 10 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Terry Adams. Secretary
