Rotary E-Clubs

Brief History of Rotary E-Club Formation
In 2001, the Rotary International Council on Legislation adopted Resolution 01-226 which provided for the formation of cyber clubs. In June 2001, in Decision 348, the RI Board agreed to support a pilot project establishing cyber Rotary clubs. Subsequently, this project became known as the Rotary E-Club Pilot Project.
The intent of an E-Club (a.k.a. eClub) is to extend Rotary to business, professional, and community leaders with special needs, including those who cannot maintain attendance at regular club meetings because of extensive business commitments and travel, health problems, or geographical isolation from existing clubs.
The first E-club was chartered in June 2001 - Rotary eClub One of District 5450.
The 2004 Council on Legislation determined that the pilot project would run through June 2010 during which time the effectiveness of this alternative membership paradigm would be evaluated.
Functioning of an E-Club
As fully functional and legitimate Rotary clubs, E-clubs pay dues, participate in community projects, and function much like any other traditional club, except that a website serves as the only meeting place. An E-Club must meet on a regular basis using the available electronic communication technology.
The membership of some E-Clubs is geographically based, adhering to regional, district, or zone boundaries. However, a few have worldwide memberships.
A member of an E-Club cannot at the same time be a regular member of a traditional Rotary Club. But regular membership in one type of club and honorary membership in the other is a possibility.
E-Clubs as a Make-Up Alternative
Among the legislation proposed at the 2004 Council on Legislation in June was item No. 04-18, "to allow attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club website activity." The passing of this item significantly expanded the definition of make-up meetings, and by extension, Rotary activity. Now, if a member misses a meeting, in order to receive attendance credit, he or she can go online. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.
An online makeup consists of visiting an E-Club’s website and participating in interactive activities prescribed by that club. Each E-Club offers one or more options for a make-up, ranging from participating in an online discussion to reading an article on the website and corresponding with the club regarding its contents. After registration and participation, a make-up credit form is emailed to the visiting Rotarian (and possibly to the visitor’s home club secretary).

At the time of this article, the RI website listed 13 chartered Rotary E-clubs.

Annual Evaluation of E-Clubs
Each chartered E-Club must file an annual report whereupon the RI Board evaluates the general content of the club’s website, its adherence to the established guidelines, and the methods it offers to visiting Rotarians for make-up opportunities.
