The August 18 meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary
Board of Directors was called to order at 7:00 a.m. in the Pine Room
of the Memorial Union. Those present were Dean Harms, Dave Kraemer,
Jim Ziebold, Denise Schmidt, Kathy Kennedy, Tim Ashley, Arch Oldehoeft,
Chuck Gilarski and Terry Adams.
The minutes of the July 14 Board meeting were
approved.
In presenting the treasurer's report, Jim Ziebold
stated that expenses were high because District 6000 dues and Rotary
International dues were paid.
For community services, Dave Kraemer proposed
asking or "requiring" each Rotary member to do some community service
each year. Involvement includes Mortensen Road cleanup, the Ames homeless
shelter, and Jane Acker's involvement with mentoring. The motion was
made that the club support Jane's mentoring program by soliciting
volunteers. The suggestion was made that community service projects
be presented to the club through the Rotary minute. Further discussion
included encouraging members in YSS mentoring project. The motion
was passed. Nancy Carroll will be available in late November or early
December to present information on the Ada Hayden Park project. Dean
Harms showed the "simplified" grant application, consisting of II
pages. The grant application must be a project that Rotary sponsors.
For international services, Chuck Gilarski
stated that an exchange student will be arriving this week from the
Czech Republic. John and Janet Lott will be the host family. She will
be a sophomore at Ames High School. It was suggested that the student
be a guest at the Horton tailgate party .Gilarski discussed the paperwork
problems, including a post office holding certified mail for 13 days,
and Loring Miller preferring choices of students be made from his
list. Gilarski stated that this student is from Ames' sister city
.
Ashley mentioned that children of Rotary members
are eligible for the Youth Leadership Conference. He will start talking
with the guidance counselor at Ames High School.
Sandy Horton could not attend the meeting,
but mention was made of the tailgate party .Costs are $5 per member
and $3 per child, and will go on attending members' bills. The Board
approved having beer available at the tailgate. The party will begin
at 11:00 a.m. at the Horton residence.
For the Rotary Foundation, it was pointed out
that donations must go through Rotary International, then come back
as a grant, in which case the donation is deductible. The club currently
has $2595 on hand, just starting this fiscal year. Two-thirds of the
club members are Paul Harris Fellows or sustaining members. Arch Oldehoeft
passed around a card he received from an Iowa City Morning Rotarian
at the State Fair Rotary booth. It was a "Be My Guest" card, to be
presented to potential new members. It invites the potential new member
to attend a club meeting, and the club will pay for the meal, not
the host Rotarian. Dean Harms mentioned the "Rotary Lottery" as a
means to get money to donate to the Foundation. A form of the "Be
My Guest"'card will come to each Morning Rotarian in the next billing.
For the District Conference next spring, the
desire is for each club to donate an art object in the $500 to $1,000
range from a local artist to be auctioned. Denise Schmidt suggested
asking students in the College of Design. Kathy Kennedy mentioned
Bill Lee.
Discussion was held regarding attendance. Gilarski
suggested recognizing perfect attendance each month. The meeting was
adjourned at 8:06 a.m.

Board of Directors with the District Governor was held at the residence
of President Dean M. Harms. Those present were District Governor Denny
Skinner, Kathy Skinner, Dean Harms, Dave Kraemer, Brian Dieter, Sandy
Horton, Dave Benson, Jim Ziebold and Terry Adams.
The group visited while dining from 6:30 to
7:10 p.m.
The meeting began at 7: 15 p.m.
Discussion was held regarding the student exchange
program, involving the status of the Ames Morning Club and problems
with Fredik Mystik (Ames' sister city.)
DG Skinner stated that the District 6000 directory
will be subject to monthly change. Attendance records will not be
on the District web site, but must be faxed in.
Matching grants were discussed briefly.
Discussion was held regarding the Rotary Centennial
Project. Kraemer mentioned the Ada Hayden Park project, and the possibility
of Ames Noon also being involved. DG Skinner stressed that the Centennial
Project must be registered with Rotary International by the end of
June 2004. If It is not, there will be no matching funds.
Youth involvement was the next discussion.
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) was brought up. Awards can be
$55 or $60 per student, and children of Rotarians are eligible. October
14 or 15 were the dates mentioned.
Chuck Gilarski joined the board at 7:40 p.m.
Ambassadorial Scholarships were the next topic.
In this situation, recipients cannot be children of Rotarians. Youth
exchange, Interact, and Rotaract were touched upon briefly. It was
stated that the Ames Rotaract Club went dormant last year. Mention
was made that meeting dates can be monthly. Weekly meetings are not
required. The comment was made that PDG Muston feels that students
should get credit for working, such as the Xicopetec project.
Upcoming District events were mentioned. PETS
(President-Elect Training) will be 25 March. Assembly will be coming
up. The District 6000 Conference will be held in Ames. Ames Morning,
Ames Noon, and Nevada Rotary Clubs will be co-hosts. The Foundation
Seminar - the regional foundation membership seminar, will be in October
or November.
The Family of Rotary Committee was mentioned.
Ames Morning Rotary already has that committee.
Regarding matching grants, if the club is interested,
we should let DG Skinner know. Checks to the world fund match $1 for
each $1. Our club has done that with the Kenya well project.
The Group Study Exchange team will be going
to Mexico, and one will be coming to this country. The trip will take
four to six weeks, and the group should be made up of young professionals,
age 25 to 35.
Brief commentary was made regarding staffing
the Rotary Booth at the Iowa State Fair Saturday, August 9. At
the time of this meeting, Carla Espinoza was the only one signed in.
Jim Christy will be the Governor's Representative
when one is needed.
The possibility of a Story City Rotary Club
was mentioned.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

I.R.S., for a gift to Rotary to be tax deductible, it must be made
to Rotary International, and not to any other Rotary source.
