July 17, 2001

The July meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Jim Obrecht, Chelon Stanzel, Rolfe Johnstad, and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the May meeting were not presented.

Jim Dickson presented the treasurer's report. Jim Ziebold had stated that the Ames Morning Rotary was in its best financial shape since Jim took office. Money is available for Rotaract and startup for Interact. The club can donate $2,500, or perhaps a bit less, this fiscal year.

At the August 8 meeting, the club will hear from the Rotary Ambassadorial scholar and Jim Dickson on the International Convention report. Jim stated that the District Governor's goal is for each club in the district to have 1000% participation in the Paul Harris Sustaining Membership fund.

Dave Miller stated that the next Mortenson Road cleanup will be in late September or early October, depending upon Iowa State's home football schedule.

Jim Dickson discussed giving books to preschool children in the name of the club speaker.

Brief discussion was held regarding the formation of a new Rotary Club, getting Rotaract up and running, and beginning an Interact Club. Rolfe Johnstad and Al Hermanson are chairing the new club committee.

Jim Dickson stated that last year was the first time in four years that Rotary International had seen a growth in membership.

The possibility of an international exchange student in Ames was discussed.

Jim stated that it is the wish of the District Governor that each club have a club assembly at least once a year. This year's Ames Morning will be in April or May.

Mention was made of the Rotary Foundation Seminar to be held in Newton on 18 August.

August 21, 2001

The August meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebolt, Michelle Conlin, Myrna Whigham and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the July meeting were approved.

Jim Ziebolt presented the Treasurer's report. He stated that the Memorial Union is now charging for use of audiovisual equipment. Ames Rotary families are being sought to host Iowa City Rotarians here for the University of Iowa-Iowa State weekend. Fees will run in the neighborhood of $50 to $70, and will be used for Rotary purposes. There will be a coffee/desert party Friday night.

District Governor Herb Wilson will visit the Ames Morning Rotary Club on September 26. The Board will meet the preceding evening.

Discussion was held regarding potential new members.

September 15 is the deadline for Rotary Clubs to submit a nomination for District Governor. Some names of past presidents were mentioned.

At this point, Terry Adams had to leave the meeting.

The Homeless Shelter meal will be provided on August 29.

Mortenson Road cleanup will be on a non-home football weekend, 6, 13, or 27 October. Dave Miller will let the membership know when the date is set.

Thomas Vanicek, the high school exchange student, arrives August 22. Myrna will take him to the high school to register. One host family is still needed.

Any suggested member names should be submitted to Craig Marrs.

Dave Benson report on programs. Many suggestions were given.

The District 6000 Friendship Exchange Committee met. Myrna serves on this committee. A friendship exchange is planned in conjunction with the international meetings in Barcelona, Spain. Others being talked about are Newfoundland, Uganda, and Brazil.

September 18 , 2001

The September meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebolt, Michelle Conlin, Myrna Whigham, Jim Obrecht, Rolfe Johnstad and Terry Adams.

President Dickson reminded all of the meeting with the District Governor at 7:00 Tuesday, September 25.

A letter of thanks was sent by the Mary Greeley Medical Center for the donation.

One member will give up the leave of absence and return to meetings on October 1. Another member is considering a leave of absence. A third member has a job conflict with Wednesday morning meetings. Commentary was made regarding a former member who would like to rejoin Ames Morning Rotary.

Discussion was held regarding supporting the Archie Martin project. Ziebold moved we submit the request seeking a $1000 grant. Motion passed.

The Mortenson Road cleanup will be 9:00 a.m. October 13, with October 27 being a back-up date.

The club will be responsible for the Emergency Residence meal on October 31.

Discussion was held regarding efforts to establish a Rotary Club in Story City. It was felt that a morning club would be the first choice, with a 5 p.m. club being a second choice in Story City.

Discussion was held regarding starting an Interact Club at Ames High School. Whigham moved the Ames Morning Club pay for pop and pizza at the first Interact meeting, and breakfast for the first Story City meeting. Motion was passed.

Tim Gartin stated that there would be an orientation picnic September 30 in Knoxville.

Discussion was held regarding Ames Morning Rotarians hosting for various athletic events in Ames, using payments as a fund raiser for the Rotary Foundation.

Jim Ziebold presented the treasurer's report. The Finance Committee is focusing on youth and international expenses. The report was accepted.

The minutes of the August meeting were accepted.

September 25, 2001

The September 25 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:02 p.m. in the Nyemaster Law Firm office. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, District Governor Herb Wilson, his wife Janice, Assistant Governor Susan Mowrer, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebold, Myrna Whigham, Arch Oldehoeft, and Terry Adams.

President Dickson introduced all present to District Governor Wilson. He mentioned that the average age of a morning Rotarian was just over 51 years.

Chelon Stanzel stated that A. M. Rotary would continue to attempt hosting visiting Rotarians for games, concerts, and graduations.

D.G. Wilson stated that he hopes to have 100 homes available for those attending the District 6000 Conference on May 3-4, 2002. He suggested using the internet to reach all 61 club presidents in the District, at Rotary6000.Org, or secretaries at the same address. He also discussed getting a password to Rotary International, registering the password, and using this to send in changes to the club roster. Changes should not be mailed.

Jim Ziebold passed out a sheet listing all Ames Morning Rotary Club donations.

Dave Miller provided information on the Mortenson Road clean up, providing homeless meals on the fifth Wednesday of any month, and the possible contribution to the Archie Martin recognition project.

Carolyn Jons discussed the literacy project, the Children's Opportunity grant for language delayed children four years old at a cost of $2000 per child, and the hope for a similar program next spring at about half the cost. Carolyn and Dilys Morris have created three programs. Myrna Whigham mention the International Public Relations Award for the project.

Gary Warning commented on the occasional club meetings at businesses of members.

Arch Oldehoeft discussed the web page.

Dave Benson commented on upcoming programs and the ease of securing such programs in a community like Ames.

District Governor Herb Wilson opened his lap top, showing how to call up the district directory via computer, rather than many printed copies, and the DG newsletter corning up on computer. There will be no printing and no hired staff, only volunteers. The sign is Rotary.org. All kinds of material will be available, including semiannual reports. There are three pages of instructions. He provided the user ID and the password.

He then discussed the District Conference on May 3 and 4 in Iowa City, with "Capital Steps" performing Friday night at Rancher auditorium.

DG Wilson stated four goals: 1; an increase in membership (net gain of 5); 2; increased use of technology (electronic) website; 3; increased participation in all events, including going beyond the club to see what others are doing; and 4; support of the Rotary Foundation in an amount exceeding $100 per member. The Group Study Exchange will change to an every other year event.

DG Wilson is asking all clubs to be Centurion Clubs, meaning each club will have a donation averaging $100 per member. When the goal is met, the President of the club will be designated a sustaining member; then the other officers and board members; then all members of the club. The Goering goal is 1000 sustaining members this year. If the needs are met, DG Herb will get his head shaved at the District Conference.

ADG Susan Mowry mentioned the Boone Rotary Club steak fry.

Myrna Whigham commented on the Ames Rotaract Club and efforts to start an Interact Club.

October 16, 2001

The October 16, 2001 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:00 A.M. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebold, Michelle Conlon, Myrna Whigham, Jim Obrecht, Rolfe Johnstad, and Tim Gartin.

Don Goering from the Ames Noon Rotary made a presentation on Polio eradication efforts and the local partnership with Unicef to raise money. The Board approved a motion to participate with this effort by distributing the Unicef boxes

The Board approved an extended leave of absence request for the Merrits.

The Board discussed the Centurion Club request and various requests for financial assistance. The Board decided that the use of the buck bucket for fund raising should only be done with Board approval.

The Board will take a leadership role in becoming a Centurion club.

The Board approved a request to give $700 on behalf of John Lott and Terry Adams. It was also decided that we need to develop priorities for charitable requests. The Board also approved a proposal to assist with a project in Mexico. Other charitable recommendations were tabled.

Dave Miller reported that 6 people participated with the Mortensen Road clean-up. We have a meal to provide for the emergency shelter .

Jim Ziebold presented the treasurer's report. The report was accepted.

November 20, 2001

The November 20 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:00 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebold, Myrna Whigham, Jim Obrecht, Rolfe Johnstad and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected.

The treasurer's report was approved.

Ziebold mentioned the food bank and gifts for families. Gartin moved we do the same as last year. Seconded by Miller, and motion passed. Buck bucket proceeds would go to the family. Non- perishable food items are needed for the food bank.

Discussion was held regarding the well project and Dan Sheeler. Contribution will be sent when connections are made with Rotary International. President Dickson will also talk to Don Goering re: District 6000 involvement.

Whigham presented the slate of candidates as drawn up by the nominating committee. The vote will be December 5.

Obrecht mentioned a Salvation Army request for bell ringers.

Whigham mentioned the friendship exchange.

Community projects were touched upon. They included the Archie Martin project and meals for the homeless shelter. That was provided the last Wednesday in October.

Dave Kraemer will be filling in for Brian Espeland on the Rotary Scholarship Foundation.

Under Club Service, discussion was held regarding membership and member induction. Discussion was also held regarding the El Salvador service project. It was deemed too late to schedule a social for Christmas. The possibility of a Valentine's party was brought up, as well as Michelle Conlon with women's basketball at the Jacobson Building.

Discussion was held regarding the Centurion Club objective, and how to ask members to support it. Ames Morning Rotary currently has 14 sustaining members.

A motion was made, and later withdrawn, to have the treasurer provide a statement at the beginning of the year to each member. A motion was made to raise the initiation fee to $50, with $25 going to the Foundation, and the club match that amount. Motion passed, then a motion was made to dump that motion. That motion passed.

Whigham moved to have Ames Morning Rotary donate $25 per new member. The membership committee would follow up with the sponsor of the new member. Second by Johnstad. Passed.

There will be no club meeting on 26 December .

The next Board Meeting will be 18 December.

December 18, 2001

The December 18 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7 :04 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Miller, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, Jim Ziebold, Michele Conlon, Myrna Whigham, Rolfe Johnstad and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected.

The treasurer's report was approved.

Jim Ziebold stated that our club had been notified of delinquency of dues. The notice had come by e-mail, but not directed to Jim.

Discussion was held regarding Centurion Club status. Ames Morning is one of 61 clubs in District 6000, with about 4500 members, or 1/3 of the district. Myrna Whigham moved that the club match $50 to any member signing up to be a Centurion Club member not presently signed up. Seconded by Benson, and passed.

Brief discussions were held regarding international study overseas and Arch Oldehoeft's web site listing club projects.

Dave Miller has been unable to contact Joanna Courteau regarding the Archie Martin project.

Club socials were touched on, with the January 6 wrestling meet starting at Morton's at 12:30, and Brian Dieter being in charge of the Valentine's party.

One new member proposal was approved, and it was noted that Ames Morning could possibly install five new members in January, probably January 16.

The Board accepted with deep regret the resignations of Jerry Smith and Judy Huber

The January 9 meeting will be at the new Wolfe Eye Clinic.

The Ames High Media Center reported that the $500 check received last May was lost.

A brief discussion was held regarding a gift to the high school exchange student.

The next Board Meeting will be 16 January. Meeting was adjourned at 7:57 a.m.

January 15, 2002

The January 15 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:05 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson. Jim Ziebold, Rolfe Johnstad, Chelon Stanzel, AI Hermanson, Dave Miller, Michele Conlon. Dave Benson and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the December meeting were approved as read.

The treasurer's report was accepted.

Discussion was held regarding meals at sessions meeting outside the Memorial Union. The decision was made to reimburse meal costs up to $250.00.

Ames Morning Rotary's $500.00 check for the Ames High School media center had been lost. Dave Benson stated that the check would be reissued and sent to Mike McCrory, the principal.

Discussion was held regarding the Centurion Club status. Initially 14 members were participating. The current number is 32. Twenty are not participating.

Two persons were approved for membership. From this point on, the $25.00 initiation fee will be contributed to the Rotary Foundation.

Dave Miller passed out a sheet regarding the Archie Martin project.

Jim Dickson stated that any suggestions regarding Ames Morning Rotary's web page be referred to Arch Oldehoeft.

Michele and Chelon discussed the upcoming Valentine Party, to be held on Tuesday, February 12, at Aunt Maude's. There will be a regular meeting on February 13. There is a potential for a tennis clinic, and/or a trip to a hockey game.

Programs are booked through February. February 13 will be Ag-Urban day, with Lee Kline being the speaker

Discussion was held regarding having a get-together following installation of new members to help acquaint the new members with Rotary and with our club.

The next Board meeting will be February 19.

Discussion was held regarding Centurion Club status. Ames Morning Rotary will have two second time Paul Harris Fellows. A special time will be set aside for all Paul Harris Fellows to pin their name tags on the Paul Harris banner.

Discussion was held regarding potential nominees for the 2001 District Governor position. Benson moved, Johnstad seconded, Myrna Whigham as Ames Morning Rotary's nominee. Motion passed.

Discussion was held regarding naming a replacement on the Board for Gary Warning, currently on a leave of absence.

A leave of absence for Carol Grant from 1 March through 15 April was passed.

Sunday, 3 March, at 5:30 p.m., a fireside meeting will be held at the Schumer residence for the new Morning Rotarians.

Dave Benson stated that most programs were filled. There was a brief discussion of the upcoming elections.

Discussion was held regarding the CAP project for the Archie Martin Foundation. There was concern that the former Archie Martin residence is currently a rental home.

Interact, Rotaract, and a potential club in Story City were mentioned.

Discussion was held regarding potential Morning Rotary volunteers for mentoring.

Dave Miller mentioned that Dave Kraemer has indicated that the Tribune is organizing a community-wide cleanup effort for Saturday, 27 April.

A brief discussion was held regarding the meeting scheduled for 20 March, which is during spring break. Three board members mentioned that they would be out of town.

March 26, 2002

The March 26 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:05 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Kraemer, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Jim Ziebold, Myrna Whigham, Brian Dieter and Terry Adarns.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Jim Ziebold stated that the club's financial situation is about the same as last year. There are commitments to the bookmobile, Rotary Scholarship, and Mary Greeley Foundation. The treasurer's report was accepted. The Board approved writing the club check to the Rotary Scholarship Foundation on 10 April. The Foundation will meet 11 April.

Stanzel gave the update on the Centurion Club status. $2,160 has been sent in this year. She stated that it takes a month or so between funds being sent in and their being reported. Ames Morning Rotary currently has eleven members not participating, plus the four new members. President Dickson stated that the club will not be sending anyone to Barcelona for the Rotary International Convention, leaving about $2500 in Convention expenses unused. The Board approved using those funds toward the Centurion Club commitment.

Dave Benson will look into the Directors Liability Insurance letter received from R.I.

Dave Benson gave a brief report on the PETS meeting at Newton. The Board opted to back Del Bluhm of the Ames Noon Rotary Club as nominee for District Governor.

Dave Kraemer discussed community clean-up. The Board passed a motion to be involved in the clean-up effort.

The Board accepted with regret the resignation of Gary Warning, who is now employed outside Ames. The Board also granted Harold Jensen a six-week leave of absence.

The Board passed the acceptance of another new member application.

President Dickson stated that the April 3 meeting will be devoted to recognition of Paul Harris Fellows, both present and past, from the club.

April 23, 2002

The April 23 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:00 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Jim Ziebold, Dave Miller, Jim Obrecht, Michelle Conlon, Tim Gartin, Brian Dieter and Terry Adams.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Jim Ziebold stated that the club's financial situation is about the same as last year. Payments will be made to the bookmobile and to the Israel Family Hospice House. The Board approved a payment of $250.00 to Rotaract through Johnny Pickett. The Ames Noon Club will be asked to contribute a like amount. Ames Morning Rotary went over the Centurion Club requirement a week ago. Excess funds will be kept as seed money for the next Rotary year.

A six-week leave of absence for Roger Kluesner. The next induction of a new member or members will be May 1.

Barb Peterson had submitted a call requesting sponsorship from Ames Morning Rotary for the Ames Senior Honors Banquet, an event recognizing the top 10% of the class. The Board voted to contribute $100.00.

It was noted that May 29 will be a fifth Wednesday, and the club will be responsible for providing a meal at the Emergency Residence Project.

The Board was also reminded of the April 27 Mortensen Road cleanup.

Discussion was held regarding hosting a group from India during the second week of May. No decisions were made.

Mention was made of Ames Morning Rotary attending an Iowa Cubs ball game When 25 or more persons come as a group, there is a ticket discount.

The Board passed a resolution to pay District Conference 6000 fees and PETS fees for Dave Benson.

Jim Ziebold discussed problems with retiring members resigning from the club, and inactive members. A subcommittee will be named to work on this.

May 21, 2002

The May 21 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:04 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Benson, Chelon Stanzel, Jim Ziebold, Dave Miller, Jim Obrecht, Rolfe Johnstad, Myrna Whigham and Terry Adarns.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

The treasurer's report was approved.

Discussion was held regarding a Rotary billboard. The sign would be posted on an unused billboard for the period of one month or so, for a cost of $155.00. The Board voted approval of the expenditure.

It was pointed out that May 29 will be the 5th Wednesday, meaning serving a meal at the homeless shelter.

No specific date was picked for attending the Iowa Cubs baseball game.

Discussion was held regarding new member installation and the social for new members. Mention was made of the May 29 meeting at First National Bank rather than the Union.

Discussion was held regarding dues, members rejoining, classifications and categories. The Board voted that special fees be established for past service members unable to attend regularly. This will be tried for one year.

A brief discussion was held regarding a club assembly each year.

The District Governor will visit Ames Morning Rotary on July 10.

June 18, 2002

The June 18 meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in thePine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, David Benson, Rolfe Johnstad, Michele Conlon, Arch Oldehoeft, Tim Gartin, Brian Dieter, Del Bluhm and Terry Adarns.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

There was not treasurer's report.

There is still a need for host families for an exchange student.

Dave Benson discussed possible club goals for the ensuing year. This included literacy, membership, social events, Rotaract, assisting Jerry Smith with his world-wide hearing assistance, supporting and encouraging membership activities in international projects, and Rotary Foundation support.

President Dickson departed at 7:55 a.m., and President-elect Benson presided at the balance of the meeting.

Del Biuhmpresented papers and discussed the District 6000 Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on Monday, 15 July.

Benson stated a desire to maintain our Centurion Club status, and setting a goal for Polio Eradication.

The Board approved a new membership application
