
Minutes of Board of Directors Meetings
(January - June 2001)
January 23, 2001
The December meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Myrna Whigham, Jim Dickson, Johnny Pickett, Jim Ziebold, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, David Miller, Brian Espeland, Rolfe Johnson, David Benson, and Terry Adams.
The minutes of the December meeting were approved.
Jim Ziebold presented the Treasurer's report, noting that the District 6000 annual dues payment has been made, unlike Rotary International dues, which are paid semiannually. He noted that the club's reserve fund was slightly over $3,000 better than a year ago. The report was accepted.
Tim Gartin will check out the possibility of finding a local student for the World Affairs Seminar. The name must be submitted by March.
Brian Espeland will fill in the balance of Kayo Niyo's term on the Rotary Scholarship Foundation.
Myrna Whigham stated that she is on the District Foundation Fellowship Committee.
It was also noted that Chad Augustine, a college student in Spain, is submitting monthly email messages.
Programs are scheduled through March. The Club will celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday evening, February 13, at Aunt Maude's at 5:30. There will not be a meeting on the 14th of February nor on the the 14th of March, which is Spring break.
There was a brief discussion on the current status of the well project in Kenya. Craig Marrs will be asked to follow up on that situation.
The possibility of a visit by Simon Estes to our club was discussed briefly.
Discussion was held regarding out-of-date email addresses for some members and whether or not to provide those through our club Web site.

March 22, 2001
The March meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:07 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Myrna Whigham, Jim Dickson, Jim Ziebold, Tim Gartin, Gary Warning, David Miller, Rolfe Johnstad, David Benson, Carolyn Jons, Chelon Stanzel and Terry Adams.
The minutes of the January meeting were approved.
Jim Ziebold presented the Treasurer's report. Jim commented on Star 1 and its support from the Ames Fire Chief and the Campus Fire Service. There was a $500 request for Star 1. There was also a request for an endowment fund for Israel Family Hospice House. The Ames High School Honors Banquet will recognize 43 students this year. Dave Benson moved to support this recognition in the amount of $100. Motion passed. Ziebold mentioned $2000 for the Israel Family Hospice House, with $1000 going this year and $500 for each of the next two years. Motion passed. The Board voted to contribute $500 for Star 1. President Whigham stated costs of the District Conference would run $175 for both days, and suggested funding those attending. Passed by the Board.
It was noted that District 6000 membership is down 60 members this year.
Rotaract was discussed. There will be a meeting Sunday, March 25, 2001 in the Buchanon Hall lounge on the first floor. Sarah Meredith and Ames Morning Club officers will meet with those students present, discuss Rotaract, and order pizza for those attending. The Club will finance one college student and one high school student attending the Rotary International Conference at San Antonio June 23-26.
On Sunday, April 8, there will be an information meeting in Des Moines regarding Iowa's natural heritage.
Jim Dickson stated that May 1 will be a club meeting work day, with attention paid to literacy and Rotaract
Concern was expressed about our club's low attendance percentage.
In the future, speakers will be given a certificate showing that a book has been donated in the speaker's name toward the literacy program.
Tim Gartin is still looking for host families for Rotary Exchange students.
Induction of new members will take place March 28, and possibly again May 1.

April 19, 2001
The April meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7 :08 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Myrna Whigham, Jim Dickson, Jim Ziebold, Gary Warning, David Miller, Rolfe Johnstad, Michelle Conlon, Chelon Stanzel and Terry Adams
The minutes of the March meeting were approved.
Jim Ziebold presented the treasurer's report. Discussion was held regarding the need for drivers for the delegation from South Africa, as well as homes for them for the evening. Discussion was held regarding payment to Sue Wuhs for driving to Chicago for the Literacy Project. The current federal allowance for deduction is $.345/mile. The Board voted to reimburse Sue $.25/mile. A check was received for the literacy account. It was in the amount of $37.00, too small to open a separate Literacy Account at this time. The cost for the Rotaract Convention is Washington, DC, is $290 per member.
There will be no meeting on July 4.
A resignation letter was received from Anthony Cawdron. The Board accepted it with regret.
Leaves of absence for members was covered. Potential new members were discussed.
The Mortensen Road cleanup project will be Saturday, May 5, ISU Graduation Day. To date, the only Morning Rotarians registered for the District Conference are Myrna Whigham and Terry Adams. It is hoped that the Rotary Scholars from Japan will also be able to attend.
On May 16, there will be a music program involving Rolfe Johnstad, Sara Meredith, and Mary Seversike, and a program on Literacy, including an update on the training session in Chicago. There will be a District Literacy presentation on July 14 at the Ames Public Library.
Terry Adams displayed the Rotaract pins, membership certificates, and Rotaract bell with gavel. The custom banner will take 4 to 6 weeks to finish and send to our club. The cost is about $238.90.
Programs are scheduled through May and June. Because of schedule conflicts with Jim Dickson and Myrna Whigham, the official gavel exchange will occur at the June 13 meeting.

April 25, 2001
A brief meeting of the Ames Morning Rotary Board was called at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in the Campanile Room of the I.S.U. Memorial Union. Those present were Jim Dickson, Jim Obrecht, Jim Ziebold, Gary Warning, Johnny Pickett, Dave Benson, Brian Espeland, Chelon Stanzel, and Terry Adams. A brief discussion was held regarding Sarah Meredith's overseas trip coming this fall. The Board voted to support the trip through a $1,000.00 donation. A brief mention was made of an upcoming music program featuring Rolfe Johnstad and Sarah Meredith on May 16. The meeting was adjourned at 7:57 a.m.

The May meeting of Ames Morning Rotary Board of Directors was called to order at 7:03 a.m. in the Pine Room of the Memorial Union. Those present were Myrna Whigham, Jim Dickson, Jim Ziebold, Gary Warning, David Miller, Michelle Conlin, David Benson, Jim Obrecht, Johnny Pickett, and Terry Adams
The minutes of the April meetings were approved. Jim Ziebold presented the treasurer's report. Dave Bush was granted a three-month leave of absence. Discussion was held regarding purchasing items for use at the Ames Morning Rotary meetings. Those items included a banner to hold the names of Paul Harris Fellows: a pole to hold the banner: flags of nations involved in Rotary; and a plaque recognizing past presidents of Ames Morning Rotary. Following discussion, the Board voted to pursue all purchase suggestions except for the flag display. Michelle Conlin is still looking into the tennis event. June programs for the balance of the Rotary year include one on Selective Service; Dick Johnson, State Auditor; the passing of the gavel and a catch-up on club business; and meeting at Les Wolfe's new location. Jim Dickson presented his initial draft of Rotary Committees and members for the 2001-2002 Club Year.
